A few months ago I sat on my couch stewing. My daughter was heading to kindergarten, and she was a ball of nerves. I struggled to know how to help her and desperately wanted her to start the year off on the right foot. After some thought and prayer, I decided to focus on a family theme, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine”, knowing that as we serve others we forget our own worries. To drive it home I threw a little kick off party, and shared with our girls the special glass jar that we would fill with pom-poms for every act of service throughout the year.
Well a few weeks passed, and now it was my world that seemed to be rocked. It seemed that every few days my phone beeped with another shocking news alert as a new tragedy hit. Florida. Houston. Puerto Rico. Mexico. All of it too widespread, too huge, and too heavy. The more I heard the more I thought, what in the world can I do?
And then it hit me. I needed to do exactly what I was teaching my daughter. Maybe I couldn’t do everything, but I had to do something.
So today I want to invite you to join my family, and the family here at The Small Seed, to do something.
We’ve helped produce an original arrangement for “This Little Light of Mine”, and all the proceeds of the song will be sent to LDS Charities. You donate what you want, and the song is yours! Here are some beautiful thoughts from Lizzie Langston, who wrote the original verses and is the vocalist!
“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine….”
As a songwriter, I take the following from this catchy little phrase: First, our individual light is little. And yet our ‘light’, or the goodness within each one of us, is what keeps the world from being a much darker place. Like light, our goodness has power to go and exist and influence perception, farther than we, the source of that light, could reach alone.
Second: we don’t have to create the light that is ours. It is already within us. We just have to ‘let it shine’.
As we listen to this song, may we find the courage to start small. May we grasp the understanding that will drive us to act, even while aware of the comparatively small size of our light to the vastness of the world’s problems. May we let our light shine, having the conviction before our Maker that we are living to the best of our ability, and lighting our circle of influence the best that we can.
Here’s to letting our little lights shine!
