There are so many powerful metaphors for the word of God, but one of my favorites is comparing it to light. Imagine that you have to spend an entire day in complete darkness. Aside from maybe taking a welcomed nap, what would you do? How would you function? Would you be fearful? Frustrated? Would you feel debilitated, unable to get anything done? Would you feel lost? It wouldn’t take long to understand that light is absolutely positively essential for daily life. Well my dear friends, so is the word of God. It is one of the most powerful vehicles in which we can bring true light into our lives.
Our scripture this month is a reminder of that. Psalms 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
A huge Small Seed thank you to Ashley Collett (@ashleycollettdesign & www.ashleycollett.com) for creating this beautiful print. The print will come right to your inbox with this month’s newsletter (make sure to sign up if you haven’t already).
Truth: the adversary knows the power of God’s words, and works extremely hard to keep us from receiving that power. He works tirelessly to put every deception and distraction in our way. He works and works to makes them seem impersonal, overcomplicated, and hard to understand. He wants them to sit permanently on your night stand, or bookshelf. But we know better. They do not belong on our night stand, they belong in our hearts.
I recently listened to a wonderful program called Face to Face where Henry B. Eyring was asked about how to make scripture study more meaningful. When he spoke of his own scripture study, he said “I read until my heart has been drawn into them.” What beautiful imagery. Have you felt your heart being drawn into God’s word?
It is our hope that throughout this month, and hopefully for a lifetime, that your heart will be drawn into the scriptures. That they will illuminate the path home, and through them we can come to know and become like our Savior.
