Faith Features: Heather Farrell of Women in the Scriptures

August 15, 2014

It’s our pleasure to introduce you to Heather Farrell, the woman behind the inspiration at Women in the Scriptures. If you have ever wanted to know more about women in the scriptures, look no further. On her blog she has done the incredible (and painstaking!) work of researching dozens of women from the scriptures to give us insight into their lives and faith. She has just recently completed her book “Walking With the Women of the New Testament” which is due to come out before Thanksgiving! Reading through the biographies of the women she has researched is inspiring and motivating, and we’re honored to be able to feature Heather and her work on The Small Seed today!

1. Heather, tell us a little about what you do and what motivated you to do it?

I write a blog called Women in the Scriptures where I share the stories of the hundreds and hundreds of women in the scriptures. So often people think that that  women are left out of the scriptures, but the truth is that most people just skip over them. My goal is to remind people that God loves his daughters just as much as he loves His sons and that they have not been forgotten.

I started my blog right after the birth of my first child. He was born at Christmas time and I found myself feeling a deep sense of kinship with Mary, the mother of Christ. I marveled at her faith, her courage, and that fact that she went anywhere on a donkey at nine months pregnant! After my son was born I started to search the Internet for more information about women in the scriptures. What I found was surprising– there was hardly anything! I wondered why no one had taken the time to write about the women in the scriptures. I was sad that they seemed to be forgotten. “Someone really should write about them,” I thought. “No, Heather,” the spirit whispered to me, “You should write about them.”

And so I did.

Years later I have written on dozens and dozens of women and haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of all the amazing women hidden within the pages of the scriptures. Someday I hope to write about all of them, which means I might be writing my blog until I am a grandma!

I recently finished a book about (nearly all) the women in the New Testament. It is called “Walking with the Women of the New Testament” and will be out before Thanksgiving. That has given me a good start towards writing about all the women of the scriptures!

2. How does your faith play a role in your work?

My faith impacts every aspect of my life and my writing. I am constantly speaking and praying to God in my heart and in my mind and He directs much of what I do with my life. I have often thought that if I wrote my blog from more of non-denominational Christian standpoint, and not just from my standpoint as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that I would have a larger and more diverse following. Yet, every time I try to write about these women’s stories without drawing from my faith experience I find that I have nothing to say.  My faith in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ gives meaning to everything… and these women’s stories and experiences make so much more sense and have so much more spiritual power when viewed through the lens of my own faith in the restoration of God’s church.

3. What do you hope people take away from your work?

My main goal with my writing is the bring people to Jesus Christ. He is the only one who calls for disciples… not me. I really feel like my blog is a ministry that he has called me to do; as a way that He can reach people who He might not be able to reach in any other way.

Mostly I hope that when people read my blog it prompts them to open up their own scriptures and study them for themselves. The scriptures are the door to personal revelation and are the most powerful way to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I want people to come to know him like I know him.

I also hope that as they study the lives of the women in the scriptures that they will gain a deeper appreciation for God’s love for women. That they will come to learn—for themselves– that God loves his daughters just as much as He loves his sons. That is knowledge that you must gain for yourself, through hard work and searching. No one can give it to you.

4. What is your goal now, and how are your working to achieve it?

Right now I am mainly focused on getting my new book out for publication! That has been a big job. But turned out incredible and I am very excited for people to have in their homes. After I am done with that project I’d really love to do some other ones about the women in the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price (other books of scripture in my faith) and the Old Testament, but I think I might give myself a break for a little bit before I jump into those!

5. How has your faith impacted you as a person?

My faith in Jesus Christ and the knowledge of a restored gospel is the most central part of my being. I can’t imagine life without it. My faith give me direction, it gives me purpose, it gives me power, it give me understanding, it gives me discernment, it gives me love, compassion, patience, and humility. In short, all the good things in my life come because of my faith in Jesus Christ and accepting of His love. It is a priceless gift and one that I am eager to share with anyone who is searching and ready for it.

6. What is your favorite scripture and why?

I love Mosiah 4:9 from the Book of Mormon. It is so simple and is  a reminder to me that God understands everything, and that there are answers to everything. One day I’ll understand what he knows, and that excites me. This scripture is my rock. It is how I build my foundation on sure ground.

“Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which the Lord can comprehend.”

7. Anything else you want to share with us?

I’d really love to encourage you to consider taking my Women in the Scripture Challenge. I promise it will change the way you see yourself as a woman and as a daughter in God’s kingdom!
